Description: From the shadow of the language to the light of the stage
The aim of this programme is to bring first-time participants closer to acting and enable students who alLeseny have acting experience in their own language to perform in Italian.  According to accredited research only about 35% of communication is expressed through words. The remainder is transmitted through movement, the position of the body in space, facial expressions and gestures. Every foreigner knows just how much Italians use gestures and body language but perhaps few really understand the meaning and use of this “vocabulary.”  A stay at the Dante Alighieri school in Siena combines language study with drama to give participants an opportunity to better understand Italian culture and the Italians themselves. It is not necessary to speak Italian well in order to participate in this course. In fact, our experience has shown that absolute beginners can be brilliant actors and often learn the language much quicker. Nor is there any need to be a professional actor in order to act well. This is a skill that can be discovered and developed as participants learn to let go and give vent to their own emotions and passions. We need only add that learning a language while having fun is by far the best way to fix in mind linguistic structures, learn new vocabulary and get to know the other participants and their different cultural backgrounds. The drama lessons are under the expert guidance of Eduardo Cocciardo, an Italian language and culture teacher and a renowned actor and playwright. (see CV) Rather than adopt a text written by others, one of the main features of this theatre course is to stage a play based on ideas proposed by the students themselves. The contributions and suggestions from all the participants will help shape the end result, using the “canovaccio” (improvising) method, which dates back to the ancient Italian tradition of the “Commedia dell'Arte.” At the end of the programme the actors will perform in front of other students and an Italian audience, who will be receptive, kind and Leseny to applaud.

The programme lasts three Wochen and consists of:
Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 12:30pm – 3 Studen a day of Italian language study in class (maximum 12 participants) according to the initial level of knowledge of Italian for a total of 15 Studen a week and 45 Studen over the course of 3 Wochen;
Monday to Friday from 3:00pm to 5:00pm – 2 Studen a day of theatre workshop (minimum 5 participants – maximum 15 participants) for a total of 10 Studen a week and 30 Studen over the course of 3 Wochen;
Final performance

The price is 1.300.00 Euros for 3 Wochen.
In addition to the lessons as described above the course will include:
placement test to ascertain the level of knowledge of Italian;
text book and other teaching materials for the language course, the theatre course and the cookery course;
a copy of the final performance on DVD for each participant
final exam and certificate of attendance for both the language course and the theatre course.

Dates 2008 (for the beginning and the end of the programme):
12 may - 30 may, 14 jul - 1 aug, 18 aug - 5 sep, 15 sep - 3 oct

Short resume
Eduardo Cocciardo was born on the island of Ischia (off the coast of Naples) on 17.10.1975. In 1999 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Drama from the University of Siena, obtaining the maximum grade possible, equivalent to a First Class Honours. His dissertation was a critical analysis of the stage career and films of Massimo Troisi. Eduardo has been a lover of the theatre since he was a child; when he was thirteen he won a poetry competition reciting “’A livella di Totò”. Before moving to Tuscany to attend university he took part in the staging of various plays in dialect. From '95 to '98 he worked for the theatre company RIDI PAGLIACCIO based in Grosseto. During this period he also began intensive research on the “Commedia dell’Arte”.  In '99 he participated in a workshop on narrative theatre and dramatic literature under the tutorship of Laura Curino. In the same year he was the lead actor in “La Paura del Sonno” (“The Fear of Sleep”), a play adapted from selected novels by Pirandello and staged by the University of Siena Theatre Company. In September ’99 he took part in the Comedians' Oscars, a cabaret-style competition organised by “Studio Uno” of Rome, reaching the finals. From September 2000 to the present day he has been collaborating with the Siena Committee of the Dante Alighieri Society as a teacher of Italian language and culture to adult foreigners. He has organised with the students various theatre workshops and plays of differing lengths and on various topics. From March to April 2001 he took part in a workshop on the comic qualities of the tragic and the tragic qualities of the comic held by Lello Arena at the “Scuola Professione Cinema” in Rome. For the last five years he has been working mainly alone, on the idea of a kind of theatre-cabaret that reinvents the traditions of classical drama, disarming it of its high pretensions that distance it from the audience. In fact he is passionate about peripheral stories, those magical yet everyday stories of people who run breathlessly after their own ideals. On this subject he has written Io come io, Una settimana di ordinaria comicità, Quando credo alle cicogne and Canto di un viaggiAttore solitario, Un circo chiamato casa. He has written and produced a show on Totò called “Un altro Totò” a brave and experimental interaction between poetry, music and dance. Povero te! and Il tra-collo della Casa Usher were two one-act shows that reinvented the structures of classical cabaret in a modern guise, enriching the acting dimension with active audience participation. “Generi alimentari di seconda mano”, with Laura Cerofolini, was a theatrical production, performed on 5th April 2002 at the “Teatro Comunale della Bicchieraia” in Arezzo, 22th August 2002 at Villa Visconti in Forio, Ischia, 5th October 2002 at the “Teatro dei Ferrovieri” in Grosseto and 21st February 2003 at the Teatro Verdi di Monte S. Savino. (Arezzo) Eduardo then returned to monologue with “il Barbiere mi assomiglia” which he took to the National Cabaret Festival of Torino – 2003 edition – winning the award for best script. In 2004 he participated in a workshop with Dario Fo. July 2005 sees the publication of a book written by Eduardo on the life and career of the artist Massimo Troisi. His great passion in life is also the cinema. He has produced two half-length films and a documentary on the fishermen of Forio in Ischia.
